Well folks, finally I’ve been cleared to let you know what’s up.
Magic the Gathering Nationals will be held this year in Minneapolis on August 21st, thats 2 weeks after Gen Con. The event will be in exact same room Grand Prix Minneapolis was in at the Minneapolis Convention Center. There is a room block secured at the Hyatt Regency right across the block from The Convention Center. Rooms are $99 and currently offer free wireless internet. It’s a great price at a great venue
More details will start rolling out over the next couple weeks including links to the hyatt for reservations and Public Events Schedule.
Yep, it’s a little later than normal this year, but that’s where we ended up.
Look for an announcement about the Magic Regionals coming soon from WotC proper. We should have that news by the first of April.

This seems like such a bad idea on WotC’s part to have it that late. Most competitive magic players are college students and that is cutting it close to the start of classes.
My play group won’t be able to play because our classes start that week, and that will really cut into our interest in playing in the major events during the summer, without having that epic motivation to work towards winning at regionals or fine tuning decks to grind in that weekend. It really hinders the fun of a magic summer that always ended with an awesome trip somewhere to play at Nats the past years.
I was given a series of dates to choose from, and I either had to smash up against Grand Prixs or Gen Con. There weren’t a ton of options for me so I picked what I considered to be the best date. Sorry it’s going to clash for you.
It’s cool, I understand. As long as Magic stays in style until at least next year it’s all good.

Yes I was looking on the website and the part for regionals has disappeared and its been replaced by national qualifiers. I was wondering if there was a change in the way its been run.
You had to do well in regionals to qualify for nationals, right? Or is it an open event/ratings thing?

Can’t people take Friday off school so they can get to the tournament? It’s on a Saturday, so if they flew on Friday night it shouldn’t even clash with class. Or do you have to be there from Friday to Sunday? I’m not familiar with the protocol.

What’s the status on the hotel rooms? Can we reserve them at that $99 rate or should we be waiting for the promised updates to come?
heh. life’s been a little nuts the last couple months. The Hyatt has the rooms reserved. the Block is listed under “Legion Events” you should also be able to get it through “Magic Nationals” http://www.minneapolis.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp I’ll get a prelim nats site up this week, promise!
